Normally the pitch would begin with' "Who wants to follow in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia?" But the fact of the matter is, "Who wouldn't want to follow in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia?" Late last year Abercrombie and Kent or A&K set up what they call an "Extreme Expedition" through the Arabian Desert or more precisely the Wadi Rum, which is not only located in southwest Jordan, but is best known for its connection with British Officer Thomas Edward Lawrence or better known throughout the world as, "Lawrence of Arabia"!
This desolate place is still inhabited by a tribe known as the Bedouin, which can be found dwelling throughout most of the desert belt. In fact, the 6 travelers who participated on the A&K expedition last year were lead by none other than Bedouin guides. Remarks made by the 6 travelers were amazing as they made their way through the 4-day march through the Wadi Rum.
Wadi Rum pronounced Wadi Raam is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southwest Jordan. In fact one of the extraordinary rock formations in Wadi Rum was named "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" in memory of Lawrence's book. Some of the most fascinating sights are the rock paintings, graffiti, and temples left behind by the ancient culture known as the Nabateans, which were a Semitic or linguistic people.
In case you didn't know, the word "Semitic" is an adjective derived from Shem, one of the three sons of Noah in the bible, not to mention a culture known to the ancient Hebrews. This is how far back this goes, which is why it's so fascinating! The area is now also one of Jordan's tourist destinations, attracting an increasing number of foreign tourists thanks largely by the Zalabia Bedouin who working with climbers and trekkers, have developed eco-adventure tourism, which is now their main source of income.
I believe we all have a swashbuckler inside of us all who is dying to come out and explore places like the Wadi Rum, experience the annual great migration of wildebeest & other grazing herbivores across the Serengeti-Mara, stand in front of the Taj Mahal, or meditate in front of the Big Buddha near Po Lin Monestary on Lantau Island. Regardless of which place you choose to explore, remember that it's all out there waiting to be rediscovered by you.
